Why Upskilling, Networking, and Asking for Investment Is Non-Negotiable

The admin profession is changing – significantly.

What was once seen as a primarily task-based role has evolved into something far more strategic. Today’s admin professionals are project managers, operational partners, and often the connective tissue of entire organisations. You are no longer just supporting the business – you are helping shape it.

And with that evolution comes a very real responsibility: you cannot stand still.

If you want to stay relevant, progress your career, and be recognised for the value you bring, three things are no longer optional:

Upskilling. Networking. And asking for investment in your development.

The Role Has Changed. Have You?

Five years ago, the expectations of an Executive Assistant or Office Professional looked very different.

Now?

  • You’re expected to understand business strategy

  • Navigate AI and emerging tech

  • Manage stakeholders across multiple functions

  • Influence decision-making

  • Operate with commercial awareness

This shift isn’t slowing down – it’s accelerating.

The risk is not that the role disappears. The risk is that you get left behind if your skillset doesn’t evolve with it. Upskilling is how you stay in the room.

Upskilling: Staying Ahead, Not Catching Up

Professional development isn’t about ticking a box once a year. It’s about staying informed, capable, and confident in a fast-moving environment.

That might look like:

  • Learning new tools (AI, automation, project management platforms)

  • Building commercial acumen

  • Strengthening communication and influencing skills

  • Understanding how different industries operate

The admins who are thriving right now are the ones who are curious. They’re not waiting to be told what to learn, they’re actively seeking it out.

Because the reality is, the more you understand the business, the more valuable you become to it.

Networking: Your Career Safety Net (and Growth Engine)

If there’s one thing I’ve seen consistently across this profession, it’s this:

The admins who build strong networks move faster, go further, and feel far less alone doing it. Your network is where you:

  • Sense-check challenges

  • Learn what’s happening in other organisations and industries

  • Discover new tools, systems, and ways of working

  • Hear about opportunities before they’re advertised

  • Get real, honest advice from people who understand your role

And importantly – it’s where you go when you need support. Because at some point in your career, you will. Building a network isn’t something you do when you need a job, it’s something you build long before you do.

If You’re in Australia – Start Here

For those based in Australia, one of the most valuable steps you can take is joining the Australian Institute of Office Professionals (AIOP).

It’s a national body dedicated to supporting and elevating admin professionals through mentoring, networking events, professional development, and community.

The Power of In-Person Investment

Online learning is valuable, but there is nothing quite like being in a room full of people who get it.

That’s why we strongly encourage Australian admins to invest in attending Admin Avenues conferences across Brisbane, Sydney, and Adelaide.

These events are built differently.

They are not “feel-good” conferences filled with generic motivation.

They are:

  • Practical

  • Relevant

  • Delivered by people who understand the reality of your role

  • Focused on what you can take back and implement immediately

And the networking? It’s next level.

These rooms are filled with professionals who are navigating the same challenges, working at the same pace, and thinking about the future in the same way you are.

That’s where the real value sits.

Ask for the Investment (And Back Yourself When You Do)

Here’s the part many admins avoid: asking their employer to invest in their development.

Let’s be clear – this is not a “nice to have.”

If your role is evolving, your skills need to evolve with it. And that requires investment.

When you ask:

  • Be specific about what you want to attend or learn

  • Tie it back to business outcomes

  • Show how it will improve your effectiveness and impact

  • Position it as a return on investment, not a cost

And if the answer is no?

Then you have a decision to make.

Because if your workplace won’t invest in your growth, you may need to start investing in yourself. Set money aside. Prioritise it. Treat it as part of your career strategy, not an optional extra.

This Is How You Get to the Next Level

There is no shortcut here.

The admins who are progressing into senior roles, strategic partnerships, and higher salaries are not waiting for opportunities to land in their lap.

They are:

  • Continuously learning

  • Actively building relationships

  • Putting themselves in the right rooms

  • Advocating for their own growth

This is what it takes to stay relevant in a profession that is evolving in real time.

I am not trying to scare you or make you feel uncomfortable. I have always said I will be real with my community and that’s what I am trying to do here. You have to upskill.

This profession is full of opportunity – but only for those who are willing to step into it.

So my message to you is simple:

  • Upskill.
  • Build your network.
  • Ask for the investment.
  • And if no one hands it to you – go and create it for yourself.

If you need help, if you need an template, if you need guidance, I am here to help you in anyway that I can. We are all in this together.
