Admin Avenues: How long have you been a Virtual Assistant?

AA: What is a Virtual Assistant?

SE: A Virtual Assistant is a professional who provides administrative, creative, or technical services from a remote location. So what exactly do virtual assistants do? I’ve written a blog with a more in-depth explanation here

AA: What did your first day as a Virtual Assistant look like?

SE: Starting with my first client and working out how to get more clients. I just went with the flow and used the skills I already had to apply them to someone else’s business.

AA: From your first day to today, how has your definition of the Virtual Assistant role changed?

SE: For me personally, I started off offering basic administrative support. Now, today, we offer a high range to elevated offerings from social media management, website design, business strategies and back-end systems.

AA: What has been your Virtual Assistant career highlight so far?

SE: Making the pivot to a VA Coach so I can share all my knowledge with others who are looking to start or scale their own VA Business.

AA: How does your career as a Virtual Assistant differ from your previous roles?

SE: I get to work with who I want to and in my own hours.

AA: What is the one thing you cannot do without in your role?

SE: Clients.

AA: What are the tools you can’t work without in your job?

SE: Computer and Wifi.

AA: What do you consider to be the most rewarding aspect of your position as a Virtual Assistant?

SE: Making a difference in other people’s businesses.

AA: What’s your “admin superpower”?

SE: Being able to pick up a new system extremely fast. Never stop learning. 

AA: What do you consider to be the most difficult part of your day?

SE: I love every part of my business. 

AA: What skills do you possess that you believe are crucial to your Virtual Assistant role?

SE: People skills is actually a big one and know your way around a computer.

AA: Can you recommend any helpful books, programs, or podcasts that you love?

SE: Steph Gorton and Tina Tower are my go-to podcasts… and stay tuned for mine coming in 2023.

AA: You have such an interesting career and have founded several businesses. What motivated the career changes you have made?

SE: Having the flexibility to work throughout many industries and to really use all of my skills.

AA: Do you think that your particular history gives you any unique insights or abilities in your role? 

SE: Definitely my career in sales has assisted my abilities to connect and develop great relationships with clients.

AA: What role have you owned, or what experience have you had, that helped shape your Virtual Assistant career?

SE: I think in my Event Management career in hotels, I was always working on multiple projects – this has certainly helped managing various clients and projects.

AA: What is the most exciting opportunity you have had as a Virtual Assistant?

SE: Working with other business coaches and seeing the impact they are making.

AA: Do you have any tips that you would like to share?

SE: Just get started, you will be thanking your past self. I wish I had started months before I did.

AA: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received?

SE: DREAM BIG!

AA: What advice would you give other admins thinking about changing companies/employers?

SE: Ensure they are the right fit for you, the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

AA: What are your top tips for keeping your resume up to date and job-ready?

SE: Keep up to date with job ads and what the market is demanding.

AA: Is there anything else you would like to add?

SE: Just be YOU! You are your superpower!!
